The Chardonnay grape was introduced to South Tyrol around 1835 by Archduke Johann and later propagated by the founder of Italy's first viticultural school. Initially known as "yellow Pinot Blanc," the variety experienced a resurgence in South Tyrol in the 1980s. The vineyards around Margreid, Kurtatsch, Salurn, and Buchholz, from which the grapes originate, are particularly well-suited to this grape variety due to their calcareous gravel soils.
