The Chardonnay grape was introduced to South Tyrol by Archduke Johann in 1835 and later popularized by the founder of the first wine-growing school in Italy. Initially known as "yellow Pinot Blanc", the variety experienced a boom in South Tyrol in the 1980s. The locations around Margreid, Kurtatsch, Salurn and Buchholz, from which the grapes come, are particularly suitable for this grape variety due to their calcareous gravel soils.
