The Steinberg was the favorite vineyard of the Cistercians. By 1239 they gradually acquired the entire location. But there were others who were interested... To protect their grapes from thieves and wildlife, the monks built a high wall that still surrounds the vineyard today. The tithe is the oldest plot in the Steinberg. Even before Eberbach Abbey was founded in 1136, vines were grown here. Up until the 19th century, the monastery had to pay wine tithes to the St. Peter monastery in Mainz on this piece of old vineyard. The tithe was a ten percent right of the church to the profit of the parcel, which was paid in money or in kind. The slope of the tithe is oriented to the southwest. It has a medium to deep, skeletal soil with good drainage. This is composed of Tertiary sands and gravels, alternating layers of gravel and gritty-sandy lettuces (sandy clay with a small admixture of lime). Colour: bright, youthful yellow with delicate golden reflections. Scent: Clear citrus and peach scent with herbal spice and mineral notes. Taste: Delicately juicy, not entirely dry fruit with herbal spiciness and very fine acidity. Mineral notes on the palate, very elegant, harmonious style with a good finish.
