At the southern end of the Red Hang, the Orbel lies in a side valley, a little way from the Rhine. Here, too, the red slate soil is omnipresent. Unlike in the Pettenthal, however, it is not the bare slate rock, but fine slate gravel. At night, the side valley, which opens to the west, acts like a nozzle through which the Rhine sucks in the cool air from the surrounding area. This leads to significantly cooler night temperatures. The coolness preserves the acidity and so the Orbel naturally has a lively acidity that makes the wines seem almost playful. The wine presents itself with a cool and herbal nose. On the palate it is clear and delicately juicy. Ripe to overripe peach notes with a hint of apple harmonize with herbal aromas and a subtle saltiness. The lively freshness of the wine is clearly noticeable and gives it a certain pull. With a piquant appearance and a firm body, it shows both power and backbone.
