The Kreuznach vineyard Auf dem Krötenpfuhl lies above the town, with only a gentle slope and a south-southwest exposure. The soil is characterized by terrace gravel and sand with loess. The Riesling grapes were hand-harvested and transported to the winery in small containers, where whole-cluster pressing took place. The Riesling was then spontaneously fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by ten months of aging on the lees and subsequently on the fine lees in stainless steel.
The Krötenpfuhl Riesling is spicy and quite taut, with fruit reminiscent of lemons and limes. Herbs are also present, along with crushed stone, white blossoms, and, in addition to the citrus fruit, a touch of zest.
On the palate, the Riesling is bright and clear with a pronounced acidity that is present from the very first sip and extends well into the finish, which is defined by a mouthwatering salinity. Here too, lemons and limes dominate, along with ripe yellow and green fruit. The wine makes an immediate impact on the palate, feeling firm and powerful. Alongside the fruit, herbal and stony notes emerge. The longer the Riesling lingers on the palate, the more vibrant the acidity and minerality become. It displays a great deal of energy, just beginning to unfold, and possesses tremendous potential.
