The Geisenheim 2020 Rothenberg GG is clear and very clean on the nose, reflecting the quartzite and iron-rich, rocky terroir of the steep-sided Grand Cru, where Wegeler holds nearly six hectares of vines up to 50 years old. Notes of porridge intertwined with lemon-scented notes of crushed red stones on the nose, clean, fresh and refined, very complex, lead to a full-bodied, very elegant and refined palate with crystalline saline acidity and a generous texture. The finish is lively, dense and very long. The Rothenberg was matured in casks and partially malolactically fermented, which gives it a round and pleasant texture. This is a serious long-distance runner that already tastes amazing, but has a shelf life of at least 20 years. Location & Terroir Vineyard: The Geisenheimer Rothenberg was first mentioned by the noble Ruthard de Rothenberch in 1145. The naming can be derived from two other possibilities: Rodenberg in the sense of making arable or clearing, or it refers to the red color of the soil. The size of the vineyard is 48 hectares, of which around 6 hectares are classified as "First Growths". With a south-southwest orientation and approx. 40% slope, it is probably one of the winners of climate change. On the world's oldest vineyard classification map from 1867, which was rediscovered in 2011, this vineyard is already listed as one of the 1st class vineyards in the Rheingau. Since 2005, this vineyard has set the German record for must weights three times. In the record year 2011, TBAs with must weights of 259°, 319° and an incredible 340° were harvested in Rothenberg. 2015, 2016 and 2017 are the last vintages with the optimal conditions for TBAs. The must weights 170°, 190° and 230° were harvested. Terroir: Taunus quartzite interspersed with red clay slate (iron oxide).
