96 points "This great dry Mosel has a striking nose of persimmons and smoke. Compact and elegant (a rare combination) on the graceful and cool medium-bodied palate. Highly structured, but that only shows itself at the very long, stony finish with its sharply defined contours. Still a bit closed. Drinkable from release, but best from 2026." Stuart Pigott/James Suckling Location & Terroir In 1900, at the height of the Mosel Riesling, Julius Wegeler was offered the unique opportunity to buy a part of the heart of the Bernkastler Doctor from the then mayor Kunz. The price at the time of 100 gold marks per vine surpassed anything that had come before and was hotly debated in the industry. Wegeler purchased 4,300 square meters, and the price included not only the vines, but also the historic Doctor cellar from 1650 and the wine stored there. A further purchase in 1910 made the Wegeler winery the largest owner in this historic location. An investment whose foresight has continued to this day: The Doctor is still the most expensive wine location in Germany today. The legendary Bernkasteler Doctor rises with its steep slope directly above Bernkastel at a height of 125 meters to 200 meters above sea level. According to legend, it was named after Archbishop Boemund II, who, after being cured of a serious illness, called this location the "true Doctor". Internationally, Doctor wines are always at the absolute top. At 3.26 hectares, it is one of the smallest individual locations in Germany.
