Since the 2023 vintage, our Doctor GG has been fermenting and maturing (partially) in used oak casks – a real boost in quality. This requires inner density and pressure in the wine; otherwise, wood would be counterproductive. The youthful nose exhibits the typical Doctor spiciness, yeast, fine toasty aromas, and precise acidity. For us: the best GG from this world-class vineyard. 93 POINTS CUP OF GOURMET WORLDS Vineyard & Terroir In 1900, at the height of Mosel Riesling's popularity, Julius Wegeler had the unique opportunity to purchase a portion of land in the heart of the Bernkastel Doctor vineyard from the then-mayor, Kunz. The price at the time, 100 gold marks per vine, surpassed anything seen before and was hotly debated in the industry. Wegeler acquired 4,300 square meters, with the price including not only the vines but also the historic Doctor cellar dating back to 1650 and the wine stored within. A further acquisition in 1910 made the Wegeler winery the largest owner in this historic vineyard. An investment whose foresight has proven its worth to this day: the Doctor vineyard remains the most expensive in Germany. The legendary Bernkasteler Doctor rises steeply above Bernkastel at an altitude of 125 to 200 meters above sea level. According to legend, it received its name from Archbishop Boemund II, who, cured of a serious illness, referred to this vineyard as the "true Doctor." Internationally, Doctor wines consistently rank among the very best. At 3.26 hectares, it is one of the smallest single vineyards in Germany.
