Location & Terroir: In 1900, at the height of Mosel Riesling's popularity, Julius Wegeler had the unique opportunity to purchase a portion of land in the heart of the Bernkastel Doctor vineyard from the then-mayor, Kunz. The price of 100 gold marks per vine surpassed anything previously seen and was hotly debated within the industry. Wegeler acquired 4,300 square meters, the price including not only the vines but also the historic Doctor cellar dating back to 1650 and the wine stored within. A further purchase in 1910 made Weingüter Wegeler the largest owner in this historic vineyard. This investment's foresight has proven its worth to this day: The Doctor remains Germany's most expensive vineyard. The legendary Bernkastel Doctor rises steeply above Bernkastel at an altitude of 125 to 200 meters above sea level. According to legend, it received its name from Archbishop Boemund II, who, cured of a serious illness, referred to this vineyard as the "true Doctor." Internationally, Doctor wines consistently rank among the very best. At 3.26 hectares, it is one of the smallest single vineyard sites in Germany.
