The Premier Cru BUTTEAUX site, located on the left bank of the Serein river, forms a unit of almost 120 hectares together with the neighbouring FORÊTS and MONTMAINS sites. While MONTMAINS, the best known of the three, is constantly exposed to cool winds and the harvest there often takes place very late, the grapes from the higher BUTTEAUX sites benefit from more pleasant climatic conditions (butte means hill in French). Up here, with a full southeast exposure, there is a lot of long sunshine, the vines are well ventilated, the subsoil is characterised by the typical Kimmeridge limestone, with clay in the layer. The wines are surprisingly accessible even when young and with fruit that is surprisingly ripe for the region. White flowers, biscuit notes and lemon zest on the nose. Lots of mandarin juice, menthol notes and white pepper in the mouth. Pleasantly soft despite refreshing acidity and plenty of minerality in the long finish. Not a loud wine, but a very accessible one for a Premier Cru.
