During the growing season, Adelaide Hills, Tasmania, and Tumbarumba experienced varying conditions, all of which resulted in excellent grape quality.
In Adelaide Hills, winter rainfall was average, laying the foundation for a promising spring. However, weather conditions at the end of November were challenging, delaying flowering and hindering pollination. Summer was predominantly warm and dry, with healthy and stable canopies throughout the growing season. This allowed the smaller grape bunches to develop excellent varietal characteristics. In Tasmania, the year was warm and dry, and the harvest was early. Winter rainfall was below average, resulting in low soil moisture during bud formation. The vines in the region were healthy and produced high-quality fruit. In Tumbarumba, the season began dry. However, late spring and early summer saw high rainfall. The year was warm, which favored an early harvest and produced a Chardonnay of exceptionally high quality, albeit with low to moderate yields. This vintage is one of the best for Chardonnay in Tumbarumba. It underlines once again how important cool-climate regions are for Penfolds.
