THE CLIMATE
The 2022 vintage in Chianti Classico was characterized by hot and dry
conditions until mid-August, especially in June and July, when temperatures were significantly above seasonal averages. Nevertheless, the vines demonstrated remarkable resilience: bud break and flowering
progressed evenly, and vegetative development remained optimal even during the hottest months. In mid-August, rainfall and cooler temperatures brought pronounced day-night fluctuations, ushering in a perfect ripening phase. The stable, sunny autumn weather favored excellent grape quality.
The harvest began on September 23 with Cabernet Franc, continued on September 26 and 27 with Sangiovese, and ended on October 5 with Cabernet Sauvignon.
VINIFICATION AND AGING
The utmost care and attention were paid both in the vineyards during the harvest and in the winery. The grapes were destemmed, carefully selected on sorting tables, gently crushed, and gravity-fed into the fermentation tanks.
During fermentation and maceration on the skins, it was crucial to maintain the balance between the fruity aromas and the quality of the tannins to emphasize the elegance, fragrance, and distinctive character of Solaia. Immediately after racking, malolactic fermentation began in barriques. Aging took place for approximately 15 months in new French oak barriques. The individual batches were initially aged separately, then blended and returned to the barrel to complete the maturation process.
TASTING NOTES
The Solaia 2022 has an intense ruby red color with bright violet reflections. The nose reveals a bouquet of dark fruits: black currants,
blueberries, plums, and figs combine with floral notes of sweet
violets. Added to this are hints of powdered sugar and gianduja, elegantly accompanied by spicy notes of white pepper, tobacco, and cinchona bark.
On the palate, the wine is creamy and rich, carried by exceptional freshness and energy. Silky, mouth-filling tannins create a fine, tightly woven structure that supports the intense finish with remarkable depth.
