Pinot Noir has been grown in Assmannshausen since 1507. From 1740 onwards, the cultivation of "Klebroth" predominated on the Höllenberg, as Pinot Noir was called in the Rheingau at the time, and since the 19th century it has been planted almost exclusively with the demanding Pinot Noir grape. The name Höllenberg is derived from the old German word "helda", an old Rheingau term for heaps or steep slopes. The 17 hectares of the winery lie within the historical boundaries of the Höllenberg site, which are among the best plots of the Höllenberg. These are located in the valley facing away from the Rhine and are purely south-facing. The soil of the vineyard, which has a gradient of up to 65%, consists of very homogeneous violet-coloured phyllite slate, as can also be found on the Steinberg.
