I am in awe of this wine. Pièce de Roche or 'the stony piece' is an inaccurate translation of the name of the vineyard in the immediate vicinity of the château. It was planted with Carignan in 1892 by a certain Monsieur Roche and that is actually where its ambiguous name comes from: 'Mr. Roche's parcel'. Most of the sticks are still from back then. Yields are extremely low and correspondingly concentrated. The organic processing of the vineyard is purely manual work, because modern tractors do not fit between the rows, which were narrower at the time. The reward for this effort is a wine as full of character and gnarled as the vines. With red fruit, tobacco, leather, interesting animal notes, good acidity and elegant tannins. Its aging potential is enormous, the fine acidity typical of the variety keeps the wine fresh forever. Planted long before climate change, Carignan seems to be thriving again in the midst of climate change.
