Pièce de Roche or 'the stony piece' is how you could translate the name of the vineyard. It was planted with Carignan in 1892 by a certain Monsieur Roche and actually its ambiguous name comes from that: 'Mr Roche's plot'. A large proportion of the vines still date from that time. The yields are extremely low and accordingly concentrated. The organic cultivation of the vineyard is entirely manual because modern tractors cannot fit between the rows, which were even narrower at the time. The reward for this effort is a wine as full of character and gnarled as the vines. With red fruit, tobacco, leather, interesting animal notes, good acidity and elegant tannin. Its aging potential is enormous, the fine acidity typical of the variety keeps the wine seemingly forever fresh. Planted long before climate change, Carignan seems to be blossoming anew in the midst of climate change.
