2019 was a year of heat waves in the Languedoc, with temperatures regularly climbing above 40°C. Winegrowers with young vineyards in particular, who did not cope well with the drought, suffered severe crop failures. Not really a year for delicate, fresh white wines, but rather for red wines bursting with power. This also applies to the top cuvée from Mas des Quernes, which this year consists of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre. The Syrah gives it structure and backbone, while the Grenache is almost overflowing in its fullness and power in this warm year. Mourvèdre brings balsamic and herbal notes, and thus a bit of freshness to the wine. The nose alone gives you an idea of the warmth and maturity: malt candy, lots of liquorice, dried fruit and a hint of good Ruby Port. An incredible amount of extract sweetness in the first impression, then graphite, pickled black cherries, plum jam and a little dark nougat. In the finish, a saltiness reminiscent of salmiak, drying but also giving the wine freshness. With its body and complexity, it can easily keep up with much more well-known Crus from the southern Rhône.
