While Petit Verdot usually accounts for only 5 percent in the La Gurgue cuvée, it is almost a quarter (23%) in the 2020 vintage, but the proportion of Merlot is lower than usual (only 32%) and Cabernet Sauvignon dominates at 43 % as always. Fully ripe, not overripe dark fruit on the nose: morello cherries, blueberries, plus subtle Pyrazine notes of elder leaf and paprika. Very juicy and fleshy on the palate. In addition to the opulent fruit with incense, black pepper and liquorice, there is also some spice. A little more tannin than usual due to the higher proportion of Petit Verdot, but surprisingly mellow tannins. The finish is subtly salty and mineral. Certainly no longer an insider tip, but still a wine that offers a lot of Margaux for comparatively little money. Supplied in a wooden box of 6.
