Borders are not for Montes, not geographically and certainly not qualitatively. Even at Montes Alpha, the quality bar was raised a little higher in 2013 in order to surpass the already great wines with the Special Cuvée. The Montes Alpha Special Cuvée Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the cool hilly landscape of Marchigüe. Cabernet Sauvignon from the stony, flatter locations, supplemented with small amounts of Syrah and Carmenère from gentle slopes, give it the irresistible ripe dark fruit of plums, cherries and figs with a hint of peppery spice. Hints of graphite, dark chocolate, leather and mocha reveal the long maturation in new French barriques for a good two thirds of the cuvée. Beautifully structured, velvety, full-bodied and complex, with a long, elegant finish.
