Penfolds St Henri is a tradition-rich and distinctive interpretation of Shiraz—a fascinating counterpart to Grange. Unlike many high-quality Australian red wines, it uses no new oak at all. First released in the early 1950s (with the first commercial vintage in 1957), St Henri experienced a renaissance in the 1990s, when its exceptional quality and distinctive style became more widely appreciated.
This wine deliberately remains independent of fashion trends or commercial influences. When young, it is rich and smooth, while with age it develops soft, earthy, and mocha-like nuances. St Henri is aged in large, old barrels, allowing the wine time to develop without adding overpowering wood flavors. Although a small proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon occasionally finds its way into the blend, Shiraz remains the heart of this elegant and timeless wine.
