First created in 1959, it proudly bears its name after the renowned Kalimna vineyard in the Barossa Valley, which Penfolds acquired in 1945 and was once the cradle of this exceptional wine. Today, BIN 28 represents a masterful fusion of different regions, with the Barossa Valley always maintaining its distinctive presence. This wine embodies the classic Penfolds aromatic profile in every aspect and is thus a superb example of the house's unmistakable style.
Visually, BIN 28 presents itself with a deep dark color, surrounded by a garnet red rim. The generous, sweet, and spicy aromas that unfold in the glass entice the senses into a fascinating experience. The nose is indulged by a harmonious interplay of umami notes, including pan-roasted meats, dark soy sauce, Sopresso salami, Chinese char sui park, and spicy quail. Dried herbs such as rosemary and oregano add subtle accents.
As promised, the wine unfolds its fullness, richness, and generosity on the palate. Mocha, chocolate, and espresso lend it a tantalizing depth of flavor. The confectioner seems to have his hand in the pie, presenting black jelly beans, licorice, chocolate truffles, as well as rum and raisins. The opulent fruit flavors fill the palate with a rich, plush texture reminiscent of a German pastry shop—Black Forest gateau, strudel, and crème anglaise. Toasted fennel seeds and fresh tarragon add another flavor dimension.
The juicy and energetic acidity harmonizes perfectly with strong, alert, structured tannins of a graphite quality that hold the overall package together. The skillful integration of the oak allows the fruit to take center stage. The finish is impressively long and refined, with a scholarly, slate-like, mineral impression lingering long after the finish.
The BIN 28 is undoubtedly a prime example of warm-climate Australian Shiraz – ripe fruit, robust structure, and generous flavor make it an experience for discerning palates.
