First created in 1959, BIN 28 proudly bears the name of the renowned Kalimna vineyard in the Barossa Valley, acquired by Penfolds in 1945 and once the birthplace of this exceptional wine. Today, BIN 28 represents a masterful fusion of different regions, with the Barossa Valley always maintaining its distinctive presence. This wine embodies the classic Penfolds aromatic profile in every facet and is thus a superb example of the House's unmistakable style.
Visually, BIN 28 presents a deep, dark color with a garnet rim. The generous, sweet, and spicy aromas that unfold in the glass entice the senses into a captivating experience. The nose is treated to a harmonious interplay of umami notes, including pan-roasted meat, dark soy sauce, sopresso salami, Chinese char sui park, and spicy quail. Dried herbs like rosemary and oregano add further subtle accents.
As promised, the wine unfolds its fullness, richness, and generosity on the palate. Mocha, chocolate, and espresso lend it an enticing depth of flavor. The confectioner seems to have had a hand in it, presenting black jelly beans, licorice, chocolate truffles, as well as rum and raisins. The opulent fruit aromas fill the palate with a sumptuous, plush texture reminiscent of a German pastry shop—Black Forest cherry cake, strudel, and crème anglaise. Toasted fennel seeds and fresh tarragon add another dimension of flavor.
The juicy and vibrant acidity harmonizes perfectly with powerful, attentive, structured tannins of a graphite quality, which hold the whole package together. The skillful integration of the oak allows the fruit to take center stage. The finish is impressively long and refined, with a scholarly, slate-like, mineral note lingering long after.
The BIN 28 is undoubtedly a prime example of Australian Shiraz from warm climates – ripe fruit, robust structure, and generous flavor make it a treat for discerning palates.
