First created in 1959, it proudly bears its name after the renowned Kalimna vineyard in the Barossa Valley, which was acquired by Penfolds in 1945 and was once the cradle of this exceptional wine. Today, BIN 28 represents a masterful fusion of different regions, with the Barossa Valley always maintaining its characteristic presence. This wine embodies the classic Penfolds aroma profile in every facet and is therefore an excellent example of the house's unmistakable style.
Visually, BIN 28 presents itself with a deep dark color, which is played around with a garnet red rim. The generous, sweet and spicy aromas that unfold in the glass seduce the senses into a fascinating experience. The nose is pampered by a harmonious interplay of umami notes, including pan-roasted meat, dark soy sauce, sopresso salami as well as Chinese char sui park and spicy quail. Dried herbs such as rosemary and oregano add subtle accents.
As promised, the wine unfolds its full-bodiedness, richness and generosity on the palate. Mocha, chocolate and espresso give it a tantalizing depth of flavor. The confectioner seems to have his fingers in the pie, presenting black jelly beans, licorice, chocolate truffles as well as rum and raisins. The opulent fruit flavors fill the palate with a lush, plush texture reminiscent of a German pastry shop - Black Forest gateau, strudel and crème anglaise. Toasted fennel seeds and fresh tarragon add another flavor dimension.
The juicy and energetic acidity harmonizes perfectly with strong, attentive, structured tannins of a graphite quality that hold the whole package together. The clever integration of the oak allows the fruit to take center stage. The finish is of impressive length and finesse, with a scholarly, slate-like, mineral impression lingering long after.
The BIN 28 is undoubtedly a prime example of Australian warm climate Shiraz - ripe fruit, robust structure and generous flavor make it an experience for discerning palates.
